About Us

Welcome to Vernon Medical Clinic

We are a long-standing and well-established practice on Vernon Avenue, Clontarf, offering a comprehensive range of GP and nursing services in a warm and welcoming environment. We provide ample parking, including a designated wheelchair space, and a downstairs surgery specifically for patients who are unable to climb the stairs, which can be requested when making an appointment.

Dr. Mary Ward

Dr. Mary Ward

Dr. Mary Ward is a UCG graduate. After finishing her GP training in the NHS in Wales she moved to New Jersey and obtained a Fellowship in New York. She practiced on a US army base as a medical director. When she returned to Ireland she worked with the HSE and did a Masters degree in Public Health. She established her GP practice in Clontarf in 2001, and became a GP trainer with the TCD GP training scheme for 16 years. She has a higher diploma in dermatology, and a postgraduate diploma in paediatrics and obstetrics. She is married to Hugh and has 3 grown-up children.
Dr. Clare Shields

Dr. Clare Shields

Dr Clare Shields attended Holy Faith Clontarf and completed her medical degree in Trinity College Dublin in 2011. She completed her internship before starting GP training on the Trinity College Dublin GP Training scheme. She worked in various practices before joining Vernon Medical Clinic in 2017.
Dr Shields has a special interest in Women's Health, Dermatology and Medical Education and holds diplomas in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dermatology and Geriatric Medicine. She is a GP Trainer for the Trinity College Dublin GP Training Programme and is also responsible for undergraduate medical students in the practice.
She lives locally with her husband Shane and their two children.

Ms. Gaye Keane

Ms Gaye Keane, our practice nurse is actively involved in childhood vaccinations, flu and Covid vaccinations and cervical smear testing. She also performs all investigations for our Chronic Disease Management scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We are pleased to announce the availability of Flu and COVID-19 Vaccines starting from the end of September. Patients will receive a text message with a booking link, and the same link will be available on our website for convenient access.

  • Test results will be communicated via text message. Occasionally, a follow-up appointment may be necessary to discuss the results, and you will be contacted to arrange this.

  • If a repeat prescription is required, it may be obtained by contacting the surgery. We aim to deal with repeat prescription requests within 48 hours. Please note medications do require regular review to ensure their greatest benefit.

  • We accept cash, credit/debit cards, and health insurance (if applicable). Please check with our reception for more details on insurance providers we partner with.

  • Yes - we have a designated wheelchair parking space and a downstairs surgery which can be specifically requested when making an appointment.
